Deon Cheers graduated from UMA with a degree in Liberal Studies. While at UMA, Cheers served as a team captain. He received the outstanding male athlete award in 2009 as well as the career achievement award. In 2009, during his final season with the Moose, Cheers recorded his 2,000th career point as well as his 1,000th rebound. He helped lead his team to their first ever YSCC Championship. Cheers was selected YSCC All-Conference first team in 2007-08 and 2008-09; with USCAA All-American Honorable Mention in 2008-09. In 2010 he returned as a volunteer assistant coach for the men’s basketball team, helping UMA to it’s second USCAA National Tournament bid. As a captain and as an assistant coach, Cheers provided support to teammates, exemplary insight to game preparation / decision making as well as overall game execution. He often provided support and guidance to teammates, was respectful to all, and was always available to provide UMA community support. Deon’s overall impact at UMA found his years of play and leadership taking our University to National success and recognition. As of 2021, Cheers holds the record for most steals in a season (106), stands in second place for career scoring (2,029), and ranks 5th overall for assists in a single season (135).
