Ewen Ian Stewart MacKinnon worked at University of Maine at Augusta as a faculty member and as the student activity director from 1973 to 2001. MacKinnon earned his BA degree in Agricultural Economics in 1963 at the University of Maine and his Master’s degree in Education in 1970. In 1973 he began working at the University of Maine at Augusta where he became Associate Professor in the College of Natural and Social Sciences. His duties also included Student Services, Director of Student Activities, Athletics and Recreation. MacKinnon designed and aided construction in the UMA Nature trails in 1973 for UMA, for statewide cross-country meets as well as for use by the general public. Consulting with Herb Doten Engineering, Student Activities, Student Services, and Administrative Services, a comprehensive plan for athletic fields, tennis courts and a fitness trail was developed. Ian MacKinnon initiated, provided specifications, and assisted with the completion of the project. The summer of 1974 the Maine National Guard did major earth moving and provided a base grade. In 1975 a Conservation Corps provided finish work including the Fitness - Nature Trail. For a number of years, he organized the UMA Mile of Art on the trails.MacKinnon promoted healthy living among his students, instilling an appreciation of physical fitness, the outdoor environment and culturally diverse experiences.
