Michael Haskell suiting up with UMA began with the lionized coach and father Richard Haskell. Even before Michael was eligible to play collegiate ball, great players like Michael Kane, remember the coach's son attending practice, taking shots, and mingling with the guys he would soon one day lead to (2) Maine Small College Conference Championships. Ian MacKinnon offered a reflection back into the past where he described Michael as a personified scholar athlete. His persistence and effort is what catapulted Michael from the player who saw limited minutes as a freshman to the 1500 plus point scorer now being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Michael understood the value of staying late, taking extra shots, and being the hardest worker. It’s those moments that matter. Though Michael was known to have a quiet manner, he exemplified coachability and leadership. Michael often was called upon to mentor teammates both on and off the court. Michael’s accomplishments became top headlines in local newspapers that gave readers a glimpse into his talents on the court. On December 6, 1985, UMA basketball fans learned about a 15 footer Haskell hit with only 2 seconds to go upsetting New Hampshire Tech 87 to 86. Days later it was the story of Haskell’s 30 point game leading the University of Maine Augusta Rebels to the 100 to 85 upset over Maine Maritime Academy, and on February 25th, 1986, a 38 point showing against Eastern Maine Vocational Tech where Haskell would lead all scorers and secure 9 rebounds to lead the his team to a 91 -72 victory. These are just a few of Michael’s stories, a look back in time, where if you Michael closed your eyes, you may still hear the dribbling of the ball on the Civic Center parquet floor, the chatter between team mates, or even the encouraging words from Coach Grover or even your father. Michael, your accomplishments become more than just stories, they become history here at the University of Maine at Augusta. Your achievements that include 1501 career points at UMA which ranks 6th all time; a 660 point season done during the 1986-87 season which ranks 7th all time; and your 43 points in a single game which ranks t-5th in UMA men's basketball history will forever more be recognized in the University of Maine at Augusta Hall of Fame.
